Piket-Bo-Berg, Western Cape
Mouton’s Valley Farm is a family-owned operation nestled in the rolling valleys of Piket-Bo-Berg, producing apples, pears, nectarines, mandarins, lemons, and buchu oil. Following their 2025 harvest, the farm found itself holding 96 tonnes of Panorama Golden Delicious Apples, approximately 200 bulk bins, with no clear route to market.
Local demand was insufficient, export opportunities had closed, and juicing companies were already operating at full capacity.
The produce faced the real risk of being written off entirely, representing a significant financial loss on an already-sunk input cost.
Farm owner Michele Starke engaged her Standard Bank relationship manager for advice. Rather than facing the loss alone, the RM connected the farm with OneFarm Share, a programme within Standard Bank’s Agribusiness stable, under the OneFarm Impact initiative.
OneFarm Share operates nationally to create a more inclusive, efficient agri-food value chain, redistributing surplus produce to communities in need while delivering real financial and environmental benefits back to contributing farmers.
Through OneFarm Share, the 96 tonnes of Panorama Golden Delicious Apples were collected on-farm and matched with registered beneficiaries, including local charities and Gift of the Givers, for disaster relief distribution in the Western Cape.
Critically, all logistics were handled by the programme at no cost to Mouton’s Valley Farm. Upon completion of the donation, Mouton’s Valley Farm received a Section 18A tax certificate for the full donation value of R865,000. This offset what would have been a total write-off, transforming a loss into a measurable tax benefit.
